Can an EV Tow a Caravan?

Attaching a caravan tow hitch to a vehicle relevant to whether an EV can tow a caravan

The short answer is yes, many electric cars can tow, and some do it extremely well. However, not every EV offers towing, and understanding maximum towing capacity, range implications, and charging considerations is essential before you hitch up.

At Pro EV, we work with EV drivers every day, from first-time owners to long-range tourers, so this guide explains what you need to know before towing a caravan with an electric car, or choosing the best EV for your adventures.

Can an Electric Vehicle Tow a Caravan or Trailer?

Yes, an electric vehicle can tow a caravan or trailer, provided the manufacturer has approved towing and specified a rated towing capacity. Unlike petrol or diesel vehicles, EVs use electric motors that deliver instant torque, which can make them particularly capable when pulling away from junctions or climbing hills. That said, towing suitability varies by model and depends on several factors, including whether a factory-approved towing option is fitted, the vehicle’s maximum rated towing capacity, drivetrain layout (front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive), and the size and thermal management of the battery system.

What Determines an EV’s Maximum Towing Capacity?

An EV’s maximum towing capacity is determined by the manufacturer and should never be exceeded. This rating reflects several key factors, including the electric motor’s torque delivery, which provides strong pulling power from standstill, and the drivetrain configuration, with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models typically offering better towing capability. Vehicle weight and overall stability also play a role: heavier EVs can provide improved composure when towing, while effective thermal management is essential because sustained loads place additional demands on motors and battery systems.

If a vehicle is not officially approved for towing, fitting an aftermarket tow bar does not make it suitable, legal, or safe for caravan use.

Towing With an EV, What Happens to Range?

This is often the biggest difference compared with petrol or diesel towing. When pulling a caravan, an electric vehicle will typically experience a noticeable reduction in driving range due to the added weight, increased aerodynamic drag, and the higher sustained power demand placed on the drivetrain.

In real-world conditions, you can expect to see range fall by around 30–50%, with the impact becoming more pronounced at motorway speeds and efficiency improving slightly at steadier, moderate cruising speeds. As a practical example, an EV rated for around 300 miles of range may realistically deliver closer to 150–200 miles when towing a caravan.

Charging Considerations When Towing

This is where planning becomes particularly important. When towing, drivers are likely to rely more heavily on rapid charging during longer journeys, and it’s also worth noting that in some cases you need to consider the need to unhitch trailers to access certain charging locations.

Vehicles with larger batteries and longer real-world range naturally provide greater flexibility in these situations. Despite this, home charging remains essential; starting each trip with a full battery is one of the most significant advantages EV owners have over combustion-engine drivers.

Is an EV a Good Tow Car?

Yes, towing with an electric car can offer clear advantages. The instant torque from an EV makes pulling away smooth and effortless; the driving experience is quieter and more refined; and the absence of gear changes reduces strain under load.

Many heavier EVs also provide strong stability when towing. However, there are limitations to consider. Range is typically reduced when pulling a caravan, charging stops require more forward planning, and not all electric vehicles are approved for towing.

If you plan to tow occasionally, modern EVs are increasingly practical, particularly when supported by sensible route planning and reliable access to charging infrastructure.

Wheel Drive and Stability When Towing

Drivetrain layout matters when towing a caravan:

  • All-wheel drive EVs offer the best traction and stability
  • Rear-wheel drive models generally tow better than front-wheel drive
  • Heavier EVs often feel more planted when towing

Vehicles like the Kia EV9 are particularly well suited to caravan towing thanks to weight, wheelbase, and AWD capability.

What to Check Before Towing With an EV

Before towing a caravan or trailer with an electric vehicle, always confirm:

  • The car has an official towing rating
  • The caravan weight is within limits
  • The correct tow bar and electrics are fitted
  • You’ve planned charging stops in advance

Charge Smarter Before You Tow

While public charging supports longer journeys that naturally come with caravan towing, home charging remains the foundation of practical EV ownership.. Starting every trip with a full battery gives you maximum flexibility, reduces reliance on en-route charging, and helps you plan journeys with greater confidence.
