What Affects EV Charging Costs?

No two EV drivers will pay exactly the same to charge their car. Even if two people own the same model, their electric car charging costs will vary depending on a few key factors.

Battery Size

The larger your vehicle’s battery, the more electricity it takes to fully charge. So, a compact EV with a 40kWh battery will naturally cost less to charge than a larger SUV with a 77kWh battery because it uses less energy.

That doesn’t necessarily mean larger EVs are expensive to run, though. Large EVs usually have longer driving ranges, so you charge them less frequently than a vehicle with a smaller battery.

How Much Does Charging Cost Per Mile?

Looking at the cost of a full charge is useful, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story. A better way to compare running costs is to work out how much your EV costs per mile, especially if you’re deciding between an electric, petrol or diesel car.

Cost per mile = electricity price per kWh ÷ your vehicle’s efficiency (miles per kWh)

Most modern electric cars achieve somewhere between 3 and 4 miles per kWh, although this varies depending on the model.

Even when charging on a standard home electricity tariff, electric vehicles are usually cheaper to run than petrol or diesel cars.

For example, a petrol car averaging 45mpg with fuel costing £1.40 per litre works out at roughly 14p per mile. Charge an EV overnight on an off-peak tariff and that figure can fall to around 2p per mile, which is a huge difference over the course of a year.

A compact EV with a 40kWh battery is one of the most affordable vehicles to charge. On an off-peak tariff, a full charge costs less than £3, while the same charge on a standard home tariff is around £11. That full charge will get you about 120–180 miles of range.
