  As part of its continued commitment to lowering harmful CO2 emissions, the government previously offered the Plug-in car grant (PICG).

  Which vehicles could apply for the PICG grant?

  The PICG grant applied to all cars that have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km that could travel at least 70 miles without any emissions. This grant provided EV drivers with 35 percent of the sale price, to a maximum of £2,500. Only cars on the government’s approved list were eligible for the scheme, but popular vehicles like the BMW i3, Fiat 500e and Nissan Leaf N-Connecta were all available.

  Could you purchase vans on with a PICG grant?

  A selection of electric vans with CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km that could travel at least 60 miles emission-free were also available on this scheme. Small vans could qualify for a grant up to 35 percent of the purchase price, to a maximum of £3,000.Larger vans like the Mercedes eSprinter could qualify for 20 percent of the purchase price, capped at £6,000. There were even a small range of taxis and trucks available at a discounted rate in conjunction with the Plug-in Car Grant (PICG).

• Grants for home EV charging ports

  The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) was available for EV drivers that wanted the convenience of having a home EV charging point. Those eligible could receive up to 75% off the total cost of their charge point and its installation (capped at £350). This funding could be claimed towards any of the following:

  • Site analysis performed before installation
  • Cost of hardware and components
  • Installation and labour costs
  • The VAT incurred by the customer
  • Extra devices like smart meters to help you manage current

  Accessing the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grant

  To receive the EVHS grant, your vehicle had to be listed on the government EVHS eligible vehicles list at the time of installation. If you had a qualifying vehicle, you could only be able to access the scheme if:

  • Your property was not a new build or unoccupied
  • You had private off-street parking
  • You had proof of legal entitlement to a separate parking space

• Grants for business EV Charging point

  The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

  The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) enabled businesses to save up to 75% on the purchase and installation costs of an EV charger, up to a maximum of £350 for each socket. Each business could apply for up to 40 sockets, with a potential total saving of up to £14,000.

  Which businesses were eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)?

  Businesses needed to meet several criteria to receive the business EV charger grant. They included:

  • Being a registered business, charity or public sector organisation
  • Having received less than €200,000 of public support in the last 3 financial years
  • Having a location in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland
  • Owning the property or having consent from the landlord for installation
  • Having dedicated off-street parking for staff use only

  You could even access this grant if you were working from home. If your address was registered as your place of business with Companies House or HMRC, Pro EV could access the EVHS grant for you. You were unable to claim this grant if you were working from home.

• Grants for state-funded education institutions

  The Workplace Charging Scheme for state-funded education institutions 

  This grant is for state-funded schools and education institutions to install electric vehicle chargepoint sockets at their site(s).

  You can get 75% off the cost to buy and install chargepoints up to a maximum of:

  • £2500 per socket
  • 40 sockets across all sites (this includes any applications made previously through the Workplace Charging Scheme).

  Successful applicants will receive a voucher that is valid for 180 days from the date of issue.

  The installation must be completed within this time.

  You must use an authorised installer to install commercial charge points.
