What are the benefits of having an EV charging point installed at home?

Having an at-home charging point for your electric vehicle means you can charge when you want and optimise your charging routine for your vehicle. It’s estimated that 80% of car charging for electric vehicles takes place at home – one of the huge advantages of investing in an e-vehicle is being able to avoid crowded petrol stations. We are all familiar with the electric car charging points that have begun to pop up at motorway service stations and supermarket car parks. While petrol and diesel cars must refuel at the pump, it is possible for electric car owners to do all their powering up from the comfort of their own home – saving money on paying for parking near a public point, and overnight charging for the most convenience.

What are the different types of electric car charging points?

There are a number of options available when it comes to charging an electric car at home. While the difference between tethered and untethered cables may be fairly self-explanatory, choosing which type is right for you is an imp

Tethered

Tethered chargers have a charging cable attached that you plug into your vehicle. Tethered chargers are usually more convenient but more expensive.

Untethered

Untethered chargers depend on a cable that plugs into the charge point at one end and the car at the other. They can be a hassle, but offer a bit more flexibility and can look neater.

There are also many different variations of chargers to choose from

PHEV Chargers

The first question most people ask is “what does PHEV stand for?”. PHEV (plug in hybrid electric vehicles) use both an electric motor and another type of fuel (diesel or petrol) for power. Our selection of PHEV chargers offers complete flexibility for hybrid vehicle owners, so you can top up the electric motor when you need to.

3-Phase EV Chargers

Though not as common as one phase in homes, 3-phase electricity is still found in larger properties. If you have 3-phase electricity, you need a purpose-built charger to deliver the best charging times for your vehicle.

How to charge an electric car at home

There are two options when it comes to charging your electric car at home – using a typical domestic three-pin electric socket, or using a purpose-made car charging point. While using a domestic socket is ok for occasional use (for example in an emergency, or if you’re staying somewhere else overnight), it shouldn’t be used as a long-term or permanent charging solution. The best way to charge at home is using a dedicated electric car charger – it’s faster, safer, and smarter. That way, you use a dedicated power supply and don’t have to worry about potential emergency trips to the fuse box. Domestic pin plug points will only be able to carry a current of up to 3kW, so charging times can be slow. For example, at this speed it could take over 12 hours to charge up an electric car such as a Nissan Leaf. By contrast, dedicated electric car charging points will usually have at least a 3.6kW current, and will be able to charge up your vehicle much more quickly and efficiently. Of course, you may choose to go for a more powerful charger (depending on your budget, vehicle type or preference). A 7kW charger can perform up to three times faster than a house plug socket, while 22kW chargers are even faster (though these require a 3-phase power supply).

Can you own an electric car without a home charger?

expand_more

Yes, though you’ll find charging your car to be much less efficient – both in terms of time and money. To get the best value for money and to provide your car with the right amount of charge for long-term optimum performance is with a dedicated EV charging point. It’s possible to run a charging cable from a domestic pin plug socket, but you’ll find charging times are much longer, and you run the risk of damaging your home circuitry. You could also charge your car at a commercial charging point, but that could be long, costly and you can’t guarantee availability

How much will it cost to install an electric car charger?

expand_more

Prices may vary depending on the type of charger you choose, your vehicle, your home and the type of installation required. At Pro EV we can provide a quick quote based on our mobile survey, so finding the cost is hassle-free. Our approved ev charger installers can also help you apply for a grant, which reduces the cost of charging point installation.

Which home electric car charger is right for me?

expand_more

This all depends on a variety of factors. Tethered chargers offer more convenience, while untethered chargers can be more adaptable and affordable. Wall chargers are ideal if your car will always be charging next to the same surface, while solar chargers are great for outdoor spaces and eco-friendly vehicle charging. For properties with 3-phase electricity, we recommend a specific charging point.
